PATRON CONFIDENTIALITY:


In order to protect the privacy of users and their right to consult and borrow Library material without prejudice, it is the policy of the UVI Libraries that information by which individual users can be identified is not released to any person, institution, association, or agency for any reason without the knowledge of the Director of Libraries.

ELIGIBLE BORROWERS:

  • Registered full- or part-time students, faculty, and staff members of the University of the Virgin Islands:
  • Students must produce a valid UVI ID card with the current semester sticker on it OR paid receipt indicating they have paid for the current semester. UVI IDs are valid for one semester.

  • New faculty and staff must produce a valid UVI employee ID. Employee ID cards are valid until employment is terminated.

  • Student and staff circulation is usually 14 days.

  • Full-time faculty circulation is for the semester.

  • There is no limit to the number of books students, faculty, or staff may have in circulation at one time.

  • Part-time faculty, visiting professors, and scholars:
  • Part-time faculty must provide a valid ID and be on the list of part-time faculty provided by their department. The library card is valid for one semester; circulation period is one semester.

  • Visiting professors/scholars must provide a valid ID from their home institution and a refundable $30.00 deposit in order to obtain a visitor's card. The library card is valid for one semester; the circulation period is 14 days.

  • Upward Bound students:
  • Must have their name on a list provided by the UB Office.

  • Must provide a valid high school picture ID.

  • Must also provide the name and current phone number of the parent or guardian responsible for them.

  • Circulation period is 14 days.

  • Community borrowers:
  • A refundable fifty dollar ($50.00) deposit is required to get a card.

  • Must present a valid picture ID and have a verifiable St. Thomas address.

  • Circulation period is 14 days.

  • May have a maximum of three books out at any one time.

  • Other eligible Library users:
  • Local high school students must obtain a pass from their school library attesting to the fact that the resources needed by the student are not available in their school library or the public library. Passes must be dated and signed by their high school librarian, and are valid for one project (visit) only.

  • Note: Students in elementary and junior high school should not use the UVI Library. Material in the UVI collection is not suitable for these students, while the material students need is available in their school library or the public library.

FINES AND FEES

  • Normal circulation - Overdue books:

  • For students, staff and Upward Bound students: $0.05 per day.

  • For Community borrowers: $0.10 per day.

  • Normal circulation - Overdue books placed on hold by another student:

  • Fine is triple the usual daily charge ($0.15).

  • Reserves - Overdue books:

  • Fine is $0.25 per hour.


LOST CARD FEES

  • Fine is $5.00

LOST BOOK FEES

  • Fine is the cost of the book plus a $5.00 processing fee.

CHILDREN

  • As stated in President Kean's memo dated September 9, 1996 to the UVI Community, "All parents or guardians who bring children to the campuses are advised to discontinue this practice".

  • Unattended children must never be left in the Library, and children who are noisy or disruptive will be asked to leave.

BOOK DROP

  • A book drop is available just outside the main entrance of each library and is open whenever the Library is closed.

  • Books placed in the book drop will be retrieved the next time the Library is open, usually the next day.

  • The fine for overdue books will be based on the last day the Library was open.

GIFT BOOKS

  • The Library welcomes the donation of significant books and materials, particularly those dealing with the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean, to supplement its collections. The Library is not, however, usually interested in back issues of popular periodicals, collections of old text -books, or any material with mold on it.

  • Potential donors should contact the Director of Libraries, who makes the decisions regarding gifts, before delivering gift materials to the Library.

  • The Library does not assess book values for donor tax purposes. The letter of acknowledgement sent by the Director can include the number of books donated, if the donor so requests.

RECOMMENDED LIBRARY PURCHASES

  • Users may recommend the purchase of books and periodicals not owned by the Library. Order cards are available in the Technical Services Office.

  • Faculty members should submit these to their division chairs for approval. The chair will then submit them to the Director of Libraries.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

  • Registered students, both full- and part-time, faculty, and staff are eligible to request both books and periodical articles via Interlibrary Loan. Registered community borrowers may only request intercampus loans from St. Croix/St.Thomas, whether they be books or photocopies.

FOOD, DRINK, TOBACCO, ANIMALS, DISTURBANCES

  • Food, drink, and the use of tobacco products are prohibited in the Library, as well as animals (with the exception of guide dogs) and radios or tape-players used without earpieces.

  • Loud talking and other disturbances will not be tolerated. Patrons who persist in disruptive behavior will be asked to leave the Library.

  • Alcohol usage on campus is prohibited by law. Violators will be referred to Campus Security.

  • Access to the area behind the Circulation Desk is limited to Library staff currently on-duty. Security of Library materials is important, and employees need clear access to Desk Reference, keys, etc. All Library business are conducted from the public side of the Desk.

LOST AND FOUND ITEMS

  • Lost and found items are kept at the Circulation Desk for one month.

OFFICE SUPPLIES

  • The Library does not provide office supplies to Library users. These include pens, pencils, tape, paper, etc. Users should come prepared with all necessary supplies.

TELEPHONE

  • Library telephones are for Library employee use only. Patrons are to use the public pay phones located at the snack bar, dormitories, and between the Education and Science/Math buildings.

PAGING LIBRARY USERS

  • The Library does not have facilities for paging Library users.

STUDY AREAS

  • Study carrels, study desks, and tables are freely available to all Library users. No carrels, tables, chairs, or desks may be reserved for the use of one person or group. Library furniture should not be moved from one area of the Library to another.

  • All carrels, tables, and desks will be checked routinely by Library staff for unattended material. Library materials that are not checked out will be removed and returned to their proper place.

PHOTOCOPIER

  • The Library offers a self-service photocopier for paper materials at a small fee.

  • Bypass copies can be made by UVI faculty/staff with their departmental Auditron. The Library does not provide Auditrons, with the exception of the Auditron for evening faculty, which is kept at the Circulation Desk.

  • Copying onto transparencies or onto paper provided by patrons is not permitted.

  • Change is available at the Circulation Desk for the use of the Library's copier ONLY.

GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS

  • The Library is a partial depository for US Government documents, available on paper, CD-ROM, and microfiche. These are kept on the St. Thomas campus. Documents are also available over the internet. Government documents are located in room L-103. Visit the Government Documents Librarian for assistance.

PERIODICALS

  • Circulation practices for periodicals differ at each library. Check at the circulation desk for that library's practices.

  • Current issues of selected, heavily used periodicals and newspapers are kept at the Circulation Desk. These issues are available for a two-hour loan and must be used in the Library. Lost periodicals and newspapers are billed at the cost of the periodical issue in addition to a $5.00 processing fee.

  • Microfilm copies of some periodicals and newspapers are available in the microfilm cabinets located on the east wall of the mail reading room.

  • Copies of microfilm can be requested for a small fee.

VERTICAL FILE

  • A file of general pamphlets, maps, and ephemera is located at the north end of the main reading room.

  • A file of pamphlets, etc. relating to the Caribbean is located in the Caribbean Room.
